Think About Thinking

Writing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. But as I never really pursued it seriously, I am not really good at it.

To fix this concern, I started reading books and blogs to further my knowledge base. I reckoned that if I have a lot of knowledge I will have a lot of writing material. Over the years I realized whatever I read is forgotten over time. So to fix that I started Journaling.

Now journaling is only effective if you go back and read what you journaled about. This habit is relatively recent. I started journaling seriously about two weeks ago. I will write about my process later. Today, I want to bring your attention to a tweet I read by Nicolas Cole.

Now Nicolas Cole is a prolific writer. He has developed frameworks and courses to assist people in how to write. He regularly gives pearls of wisdom in the world of writing for free on twitter. I made the mistake of not bookmarking his tweet, but I wrote down the gist of it. He said that he likes to think about what he is thinking and then he writes about it.

How does one think about what they are thinking?

I started researching the concept of analyzing my thoughts and then noting them down. This gave birth to the journaling concept I mentioned earlier. But yet I was not producing anything to write.

That is when I came across Dickie Bush’s (another prolific writer and a partner of Nicolas Cole in some of his endeavors) method of writing:

Brain Dumps!

Brain dumps in its simplest form is journaling whatever comes to your mind regarding a topic at hand. I incorporated this into my daily journaling routine. I like my daily journals in the morning but I do my dumping at nights. The theory is that after consuming information throughout the day, I may be able to have sizeable brain dump which can then be converted into blogs.

If you are reading this, you are reading a direct result of this habit. Although I am not regular in this project, but I hope to be very soon.
